In commemorating the 2017 World Health Organization Day with the theme, ‘Depression: Let’s Talk’, Her Excellency, Ugo Nneoma Nkechi Rochas Okorocha has enjoined the good people of Imo State to go back to their cultural ways of communal living where everybody was their brother’s keeper and discourage the current silo lifestyle which contributes to the increasing rate of Depression in society.
Depression according to the World Health Organization is an illness characterized by persistent sadness and a loss of interest in activities that you normally enjoy, accompanied by an inability to carry out daily activities, for at least two weeks.
Depression is a mental disorder that affects men and women of all ages; children from as early as 5 years of age to aged adults,, educational background, economic status and from all races. The statistics by the World Health Organization has it that roughly one in five women and one in ten men suffer depression and the following has been identified as symptoms of depression; loss of energy, change in appetite, sleeping more or less, anxiety, reduced concentration, indecisiveness, restlessness, feelings of worthlessness, guilt, hopelessness and thoughts of self-harm or suicide.
World Health Organization has prescribed ‘THE TALKING THERAPY’ as one of the efficient means of dealing with depression. Indeed, talking to someone you can trust can be a first step towards prevention & recovery from depression. The talking therapy works whether you are old or young, male or female, rich or poor, educated or uneducated.
While wishing Imolites a Happy World Health Day, Her Excellency, Ugo Nneoma Nkechi Rochas Okorocha emphasizes the need for effective communication between parents and children, spouses, employers and employees, neighbors’ etc.
And most importantly, Her Excellencly, urges every one of us to develop and sustain a deep relationship with God Almighty, involving Him in our everyday life, casting all our cares on Him for He truly cares for us.
